Energy Technology

General Atomics’ Electromagnetic Systems (EMS) Division is developing a range of technologies to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of modern power generation and energy conversion systems.  EMS builds power conversion devices and is developing motor/generator systems that can improve the operation of renewable energy systems harnessing the power of the wind, sun, and ocean currents, and that also have promising applications in the oil and gas industry.

Products and Technology

Renewable Energy Power Conversion
GA offers a variety of products that improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of power conversion in renewable energy plants, including wind, solar, and ocean current systems.  GA high-power inverters convert the energy output of permanent magnet, Stirling, and other generators to high-quality, high-voltage AC power compatible with the electric power grid.  GA is also developing high-torque, low-speed motor/generator technologies that can provide direct-drive systems to complement GA power inverters, offering an Integrated Direct Drive Power Conversion (IDDPC) system for renewable energy applications.

Oil and Gas Industry Products
GA energy products offer numerous potential advantages to the oil and gas industry.  GA high-power inverters can be used to drive high-speed motors that can efficiently compress gas in natural gas pipelines.  GA advanced power distribution products have the potential to increase the efficiency of energy utilization on off-shore oil and gas platforms
